My OPINION:
The body doesn’t up-regulate blood pressure for the fun of it.  It isn’t trying to harm you.

It feels the NEED for higher blood pressure, so it works hard to try to supply whatever organ is sensing a low blood supply.
The brain/the kidneys might be sensing low blood FLOW/low oxygen levels, so it increases pressure to maintain homeostasis.

So when we give a blood pressure drug, yes the blood pressure DOES come down, BUT the original organs’ alarm signal doesn’t go away, in fact it INCREASES.  Whatever organ was experiencing low blood flow, now has super low flow (but "good" blood pressure).

The body is incredibly smart and will find a way to INCREASE the blood pressure, going around the mechanism of the blood pressure drug, to maintain homeostasis.

Which at this point doctors will either increase the dose, or add a different drug.
So the body will find a new path around the new drug, in time, and the cat and mouse game goes on forever.

The kidneys MAY be sensing low blood flow and will want to increase the pressure to itself, but if uncorrected over time, higher blood pressure does do damage to the kidney structure, (but they’re also damaged by lack of blood flow).  So the quandary continues.

The need for blood supply usually is in the MICROVASCULAR beds (capillaries), NOT the MACROVASCULAR sytem (arteries).

It’s why diabetics have such a hard time with their kidney’s (poor capillary flow), they’ll have trouble with their eyes (poor capillary flow), they’ll have trouble with their feet (poor capillary flow).  Also, men will almost always have erectile dysfunction (poor capillary flow in the penile capillaries).  Viagra was first designed to treat blood pressure, NOT ED.

Things that affect the capillary flow are things like high blood sugars from the damage it does.

Anything that makes the arteries MORE STIFF will also increase blood pressure.
Arteries are suppose to be supple like a new bicycle tire, easily able to expand and contract.
This is where things like magnesium comes in, as it acts like a natural calcium channel blocker and helps the arterial wall relax.
Chronic stress makes the arteries more stiff and clamp down.
Smoking worsens endothelial function.
Exercise helps improve endothelial function.

Calcified arteries definitely affect the arterial pliability.  This where Vit D/Vit K2 might come in.

Trans fats seem to make the arteries more stiff.  Trans fats are a very "rigid" fat.
Fats do/should incorporate itself into each cell in the wall of the arteries.
But if the cell itself is "stiff", it can’t stretch like it should.  And a trans fat ladden cell is a stiff cell.
A trillion trans fat laden cells in the arterial trees is a lot of stiffness.

So the blood pressure fix is to remove the source of arterial stiffness (no trans fats, no processed fats, get rid of arterial wall calcium).  Anything that improves arterial suppleness/pliability helps here.  Supplements like arginine, citruline, and things that increase nitric oxide.

AND start to improve the capillary blood flow.  This is where supplements like gingko biloba, vinpocetine, Pycnogenol, etc come into play.  (Anything that seems to help Alzheimer’s patients helps, as one of the parts of that disease is crappy blood flow to the brain)

Also red blood cell size and stiffness come into play.
Some capillaries (most) are so small that the red blood cell has to fold itself in half, like a taco.
If a red blood cell if too big or too stiff, and can’t fold itself, it will impede all the other red blood cells in back of it.
Vitamin B12/folate deficiency is famous for making red blood cells too big, and will worsen the problem.
Maybe this is why people with severe B12 deficiencies will have Alzheimers symptoms (lack of capillary blood flow/oxygen to the brain)

Lastly, the BEST blood pressure treatment is WEIGHT LOSS, (loss of visceral fat).

So it’s not so simple as just giving someone a blood pressure pill and walking away...

Boo,

That was a great opening post.  Clear, concise, and ties a lot of things together.  I copied it, and put it in my best of cureality quotes folder.

Really, Boo. I want to know how the ’1’ was treated. Stents? Surgery? Do you think the Davis protocol could move that needle?

No one is too old to improve.
The body will ALWAYS seek health first and foremost.

Most everybody starts off by testing their mag levels.
Mag is a natural calcium channel blocker.

"Mag is a natural calcium channel blocker."
What benefit does being a natural calcium channel blocker provide? I’m sure I should know, lol.

Ah, a google search showed it relaxes blood vessels.

By eating the diet that Dr. Davis recommended and taking the supplements for 9.5 years, I’ve been able to gradually lower my olmesartan medoxomil dose from 40 mg/day to 10 mg/day.

The alcohol is indeed an issue, Wag, that may be contributing to your highish BP.

Have you considered occasional intermittent fasts? They are a very effective way to gain better control over blood pressure.

I had a patient once that would take his blood pressure like 5 - 6 times a day.
He’d bring in these vast spread sheets of all of his blood pressures for months for me to look at.
