I recently got a new Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT) ultrasound.

After having had bypass surgery, I can’t really evaluate my cardiovascular health with say a calcium scan, for example.

So, I figured I’d get a CIMT, which some experts claim is a surrogate method of evaluating arterial health.

Historically for me, the CIMT has had no relation to my heart health. My two previous CIMT’s in 2011 and 2012 were excellent, yet I knew I had significant heart disease from my 64-slice CT angiogram in 2010.

In 2012, for example, my Intima Media Thickness (IMT) in each artery was 0.70 mm. That’s rated as normal for a person 30 - 50 years old, so I was doing well as I was 62 at that time.

The 2012 report said: No plaque, Normal IMTs, A normal study.

My latest CIMT done on April 2, 2019 showed a CIMT measurement of 0.80 mm on the right side, which is normal for a man my current age.

But the left side increased to 1.25 mm. That got noted in my report, but I have no idea whether the increase is meaningful or significant.

I suspect not, based on the other comments reported by the doctor who analyzed my ultrasound.

She wrote:

Significant atherosclerotic plaque is not seen in the carotid arteries on either side. Doppler flow and waveforms are within normal limits. Normal directional flow is seen in the vertebral arteries. No hemodynamically significant stenosis is seen on either side.

But darn, what about that left-side increase to 1.25 mm? My doctor suggested a statin - hey, what do you expect?

I wonder if she even can refer you to a study showing a benefit of a statin with such a thickness increase?
