Check out my latest metabolic results - Done Feb 11, 2020

Fasting Glucose 86.4 mg/dL (I like it)

Fasting Insulin 4.46 mIU/ml (I like it)

HOMA-IR 0.95 (I like it)

And there’s that darn HbA1c.

Are you ready for it?

Care to guess what it was?

Here you go: 5.7 (I don’t like it).

There may be an explanation for this discordance. Bob Niland has mentioned it and I’ve seen it discussed elsewhere as well...

HbA1c is typically based on the idea that you can gauge how much your red blood cells are being glycated because the cells get replaced every 3 months.

But what if a person’s cells persist longer than the standard 3 months?

This can create a HbA1c result that seems high, yet does mean you are becoming diabetic or that you have insulin resistance.

Based on the low-carb diet I eat (largely animal-based), I wouldn’t expect HbA1c to be pushing 5.7.

NOTE: Here are some of my previous HbA1c values going back a few years:

Nov 6, 2019 5.5
July 8, 2019  5.6
June 3, 2019 5.2
June 20, 2018 5.3
April 9, 2018 5.5
March 23, 2018 5.4
Dec 8, 2017 5.3
Sept 8, 2017 5.3
June 26, 2017 5.2
May 26, 2017 5.4
Feb 3, 2017 5.1

Maybe it’s gluconeogensis from meat and your body even overcompensating for the lack of carbs in your diet by making extra sugar. It seems to be that way with insulin, so maybe it’s likely with your body creating sugar
